Playing golf in the winter throws up many challenges.  You must deal with playing in cold and wet weather and ensure the body remains warm so you can perform to your best without getting injured.  Then there is the possibility of wind and rain to deal with, which can be extremely tricky when playing drives and approach shots.

However, one of the most difficult aspects of playing golf in the winter is putting and this can have a big impact on your score.  Putting on winter greens is not easy but we have some simple steps which will help you along the way.

Firstly, you must always mark and clean your ball when putting on winter greens.  The ball may have some mud or excess water on it which will take the putt offline.  You are allowed to pick up and mark your ball so always take advantage of being able to do so in winter conditions to clean your ball on the green.

In addition, always wipe the face of your putter clean before playing each putt.  Dirt or grass can easily become attached to the face of the putter and this could lead to a poor contact when playing the shot.  It only takes a few seconds to clean the face of the club but it is surprising how many beginner golfers forget to do so and see their putt fail as a result.

The ball is going to be slower on winter greens and therefore you must be firmer with your putts.  Not only will it allow your ball to travel the desired distance but it will also keep its line for longer.  When playing short putts in winter, do not be afraid to make a firm stroke as this will assist in keeping the ball on target and away from any potential breaks.

Always take time before a round of golf in winter to play on the practice green.  Make some putts from various distances from the hole and also try some putts with a significant break.  Think about how much pace you need to hit each putt to reach the hole and how the ball is breaking.  Having an idea of what to expect on the first green will help you make a confident putt.

When playing short putts, try aiming for a specific spot at the back of the hole.  Place at tee behind the hole on the practice green and aim towards that when making your putt.  Doing this will focus your aim on a specific point and increase your margin for error on winter greens.
