gain confidence with the putter

You have many types of shots to play when on the golf course.  From the driver, fairway irons, escape shots and approach play, there is a great deal you must get right to land on the green with a chance of par or birdie.

However, a few missed putts and before you know it, you have lost all confidence in your putting.  You dread pulling out the putter on each hole and believe you are going to miss the putt and a great opportunity you have given yourself with you previous shots.

What can you do when you are lacking confidence with the putter?  Today, we have some great tips to help you build confidence with the putter.

It may seem counterintuitive when the aim is to build confidence but you must start with a realistic look at your putting.  Make a note of how many putts your are taking on each green throughout a round and take a lesson with a professional to get some advice as to what you may be doing wrong but also what you are doing well.

Just a few words of encouragement from the club pro can go a long way when building confidence with the putter.  Build a plan of what you are trying to achieve with your putting and put it into practice.  Nothing breeds confidence better than having a clear plan in place.

Do not feel all you should do is focus on the weak areas of your putting.  When practicing, you should work on your strengths and weaknesses equally.  Working on your strengths cements them in place and also improves your confidence with the putter as you know you doing well in this aspect of your putting.

Whatever you decide to work on in your practice sessions, always end on a positive note.  You will need to work on your weaknesses to improve your putting confidence but you are advised to start with that and end by working on your strengths.

If you leave your final practice session before playing a round of golf by focusing on the negative aspects of your putting, it is not going to put you in a confident frame of mind.  Finish your putting practice on a positive note every time and you will return to your next practice or round of golf feeling good about your putting.

Finally, allow yourself a little celebration when you make a putt.  It could be anything from a muttered ‘get in’ to yourself or a fist-pump but do not deny yourself recognition when you make a nice putt.  Do not worry about what others think of you, the more you celebrate making a putt, the better you will feel whenever you step onto the green.
