Boosting Confidence on the Golf Course

confidence on the golf course

While there are many aspects to playing golf, many of which involve a physical approach, there are others which are invisible.

Confidence on the golf course is something which you cannot necessarily see because a player can still feel confident if they are not playing well and can feel not very confident when having a good round.

Some players seem to exude confidence in the way they conduct themselves on the course but again, this does not mean they are feeling confident about their game on the inside.

However, having the right level of confidence is an important part of great performance on the golf course and today we have some great tips if you are struggling with your own confidence during a round of golf.

Perhaps the most difficult element of confidence to control on the golf course is self-criticism.  You must get away from beating yourself up every time you make what you consider to be a bad shot.  It pays to remember the most important shot in your round is the one you are about to play, not what has happened previously.  You will have plenty of time to think about that after your round.

As an extension to this point, do not try and analyse your technique during your round.  This only serves to lower your confidence levels as you are clearly doubting yourself and your swing.  Concentrate on what you are doing on the golf course, which is trying to get the ball to land in a target area.  Keep the technical stuff for the driving range and practice green.

Having a defined pre-shout routine will help in maintaining a high level of confidence on the golf course.  You know, whatever the situation may be, you have a standard approach to every shot and this keeps you focused and in control and only serves to improve confidence.

While it is good to look back on your round and to fix things that might have gone wrong, you should also spend time thinking about the things you did well.  Which parts of your game were good and how did it feel when you were playing?  Keep these in the forefront of your mind and you will feel confident when the same situation arises during your next round of golf.

Finally, if you do feel yourself losing confidence on the golf course, take your mind back to when you have played well.  Think about what you did and how it felt.  You know you can play good golf shots and even if you are having an off day, it doesn’t mean your confidence levels should drop.

Even the top professional players have a bad day at the office and that means you are going to have some too.  Remember what you are capable of when you are playing well and this will keep your spirits up if you are feeling down.
