Golf Rules and Etiquette

There are many rules you need to be aware of when playing a round of golf.  There are also different rules depending on the type of tournament you are playing.  Rules can differ between stroke play and match play events for example.

However, there are some simple rules and pieces of etiquette which all beginner golfers should know before playing a round of golf.

Firstly, make sure you have the correct equipment.  This means you can have a maximum of 14 golf clubs in your bag.  You can take less clubs if you wish but you should never carry more than the limit.

You will need to have enough tees and balls in your bag to make it around the course without having to ask other people.  If it is your first round of golf, it is best to carry as many balls as you can without it becoming troublesome.  You will also need a ball mark repair tool.

If you always have this equipment, you will never need to bother your playing partners for anything.

Check the dress code of the club you will be playing at and make sure you abide by that code.  Turning up in casual shorts only to be told you cannot play is a nightmare and will either lead to you cancelling your round or purchasing clothes in the pro shop.  It’s also embarrassing for both you and your friends.  Saying you did not know the dress code is not an excuse.

When on the course, the winner of the previous hole always plays first.  It does not matter who happens to be first to the tee box, whoever shot the lowest score or won on the previous hole has the honour of playing first.

However, if the golf course is busy and you need to speed up play you can agree as a group to play as and when each player is ready.  This should be decided upon by every player before the next tee shot.

Always be prepared to play when it is your turn.  Keeping up the pace of play around a golf course is very important and if you start holding people up needlessly, it can be very frustrating.  If you think you are next to play on the fairway but are not sure, do not be afraid to take the initiative and play your shot.

Try and repair the ground as best you can after your shot.  It only takes a few seconds and will keep the course in good condition for both yourself and other golfers.

Finally, and most importantly, try and have fun.  You are playing golf because you enjoy the sport and most likely meet up with friends and play as a group.  Allow yourself to laugh when you hit a bad shot and don’t be afraid to smile on the course.

It’s surprising how many people never smile when on the golf course but doing so can lighten the mood of the whole group.

Keep a good understanding of the basic rules and etiquette and enjoy yourself.
