We are all at different stages of our golfing development but at one time, we were all beginners. Whatever we do in life, there are new things which you will try and in doing so you will be a beginner. The same applies in golf and if you are considering playing golf for the first time, we have some great tips to get you started as a beginner.
Firstly, if you are not sure if golf is going to be right for you, ask if you borrow some old clubs from a friend or rent some clubs from a local golf club. Buy some cheap balls and go to a local field and play a few shots. It does not matter what the outcome of the shots are in terms of quality, just get the club in your hands and play some shots.
It is advisable to do this before heading to a driving range as you could easily become intimidated if there is a large number of people there and you are not sure what you are doing.
Once you have tried a few shots and you are 100% certain you would like to play golf, you can begin thinking about purchasing your own equipment. To begin with, you only need the basics and you could even start by heading to a pro shop or golf store and ask for some help. Tell them you are just starting and would like to buy some golf clubs to get you going.
Use the test area of the store to try out some clubs and see which ones feel right for you. Be patient and do not select a club at random as if you come away with something unsuitable, it could spoil your progress as a golfer.
Does the club feel good in your hand? Does it feel nice and easy to control when you swing the club? Do you like the way it feels when you hit the ball? Ask yourself these questions before committing to a purchase.
Even if you come away with just a driver, wedge and putter, it is a good start. As your skills improve, you can add more clubs to your collection until you have a set which matches your ability.
Now you have a few clubs to play with, you can book an introductory lesson at your local golf club. This will give you the best start to your golfing life. You will begin by learning the fundamentals and if you can get them in place so your grip, stance, swing is good, you will find it much easier to progress and improve over time.
When you feel your are ready, you can book a round of golf at a beginners course. Do not try and play a tough course to begin with, however confident you are feeling. Getting a bad score on a tough course can be demoralising so always play on a course which is suited to your ability and above all else, have fun.
