There are still many opportunities to get on the golf course for those who are living in countries where winter is taking over. However, the amount of times you will play golf over the winter compared to the spring and summer is reduced.
That doesn’t mean you should stop playing and thinking about your golf during the winter months. Even if you cannot get on the golf course very often, there are things you can do which will prepare you for the spring.
The first thing to do is evaluate your golf equipment. Look through your clubs and check the condition of each one. Even if the club heads and shafts are in good condition, some of the grips may need changing for example.
Assess your golf balls and the condition there are in, you may need to invest in some new balls to the start the summer season. Also check your golf bag to make sure it is in full working order without any damage and the same applies to your golf shoes.
The winter is a great time to purchase anything you need ahead of the spring.
If you are using golf as a part of your fitness, the winter may be a good time to create a fitness routine to keep you in shape ahead of next season. You do not want to step on to the first tee having completed no physical activity throughout the winter. So, why not create a routine or ask a fitness instructor to tailor something for you with golf in mind.
Nothing beats actually having the golf club in your hand and just because you may be stuck indoors for much of the winter period, it does not mean your clubs should be packed away.
You can use this time to work on aspects of your game and one of the most important is putting. To practice putting indoors over winter you do not need much space and you can use the carpet in a living room for example. If you would like to have something more realistic on which to putt, you could invest in an indoor putting green.
There are also many indoor putting aids you can buy which will help you with your putting throughout the winter and see you coming back in the spring full of confidence on the greens.
You can also practice your full swing indoors during the winter by purchasing a golf mat and golf net. These can be set-up in any room which is big enough for you to make a full swing safely. You can work on things like the impact location of the ball on the club face by using a basic dry-erase pen on the face of the club.
Do not waste time in winter dreaming about the summer, instead use the time to check your equipment and work on your game.
