Every golfer wants to lower their score. Some players are prepared to put in more time and effort away from the golf course in an attempt to lower their score while others turn up on the day of a round and hope for the best.
However, there are some simple things you can do to lower your score and they do not take a great deal of effort.
Firstly, you can work on your putting. This is one of the more difficult aspects of golf and is completely different to all other areas of the game. Every player, even professionals struggle with their putting from time to time but there are two things you can do to make improvements.
Speed control is vital on the green and this means having the ability to control the distance of a shot so it does not race by the hole or end up stopping very short. If you have no time to practice, turn up to the golf course 5 minutes earlier and get on the practice green. Use the time to get used to the speed of the greens and even if you miss a putt, your ball will not be far away.
The top players can hit long drives and get on the green using big iron shots but for the majority of beginner and amateur players this is not going to happen. Therefore, you must be competent with the wedge in your hand.
If you can get the ball on the green 50% of the time when using a wedge, you will be well on your way to lowering your score. When you do have time to be on the driving range, devote some of it to using the wedge and try and become confident when using this club as you may need it a lot during a round.
Away from the technical aspects of golf, course management is very important if you want to lower your scores easily. Study the golf course using the scorecard and Google Earth. Take time at home to work out distances between the tee, hazards and the green. Think about where you need to hit the ball to allow you to use the clubs you know you can hit consistently.
Always trying to hit the ball as far as possible is not the best way to approach a round of golf. Have a plan in mind and leave yourself shots with the clubs you know you can play well.
