When playing golf, it is good to set goals and one of the most common goals for beginner golfers is breaking 100. What that means is playing a full round of 18 holes in under 100 shots. A 100 shots may seem like a lot but you only need to have a couple of bad holes and it quickly becomes out of reach.
So what things can you do when attempting to break 100?
Perhaps one of the best things to do from a mental point of view is to not add up your score until the end of the round. If you become bogged down in the number of shots you are taking this will add a ton of pressure to your final few holes.
Imagine you are close to breaking 100 with three holes remaining and you know exactly how many shots you need to take on each to finish on 99 shots or lower. Or even worse, think about the pressure you will be under if you have 5 shots on the final par-4 to break 100. It will be unbearable so do not place yourself in that situation.
Play the course one shot at a time without worrying about your overall total and you may be pleasantly surprised when you add up the total at the end of the round.
The driver may be your favourite club on the range but it can quickly turn into your worst enemy on the golf course. Trying to hit the ball a long way off every tee is a mistake and will lead to dropping more shots than you are ever likely to gain.
If you are struggling to break 100, try playing a round of golf without having the driver in the bag. This will remove temptation and you can concentrate on getting the ball on the fairway rather than hitting it as far as possible.
When you are on the fairway, then next thing to think about is the approach shot. If you can see the flag waving in the distance, the changes are you will zone in on that and think about nothing else. Trying to get the ball close to the flag is great when it pays off but when trying to break 100 the first thing you must do is get the ball on the green.
This means aiming for the largest section of the green, regardless of pin position. You will take away the pressure of trying to land the ball close to the hole by aiming for the middle of the green and even if you leave yourself a long putt, you are on the putting surface and that’s all that matters when trying to break 100.
