One of the many great things about golf is it can be played by people of all ages. However, that doesn’t mean injuries never happen and one of the most common reasons for an injury to occur on the golf course is because a player has not warmed up beforehand.
While golf may not seem as energetic as football, rugby or ice hockey, you will be swinging the club fast, especially the driver and this requires the muscles to be warm and ready for action to avoid injury.
Today, we have some great stretches you can do before playing a round of golf which will get you and your muscles ready to swing the club.
Before you start, take a few minutes to walk around and get your body moving.
The stretches you do before playing golf can have an impact on how well you play. If you complete a set of static stretches, this is not in keeping with what you are about to do on the golf course. You want your muscles to be ready for movement and a static stretch is not going to prepare them in the best way.
Therefore, we are going to look at two dynamic stretches, which keep the muscles and the body moving and will get them ready for playing golf.
Firstly, take a golf club, such as a short iron and hold it parallel to the ground with the head of the club in one hand and the butt of the handle in the other. Only use a club which allows you to grab both ends comfortably.
Next, make a slow backswing as you would if holding the club normally. Do not complete a full backswing but go back to 50% your usual full back swing and hold the pose there for a couple of seconds before returning to your starting position.
This stretch helps to get your body rotating, just like it is going to when on the golf course and will have you feeling flexible and ready for the first tee.
The second stretch you can do is to take your usual golf stance but without a club in your hands. Hold your hands flat, so the palm of both hands is flat against each other and move your right hand behind your left, so the back of your hands are touching each other.
Now make another swing as you would when playing a shot but this time take the swing further back. Use your right hand to push against your left hand and make the swing, holding the pose at the top for a couple of second before returning to your starting position. You can repeat this several times.
Completing this dynamic stretch will get your shoulder muscles warm and lose and combined with the previous stretch will get your body ready to make a great swing on the first tee.
As with any stretching and exercise, take your time and only complete them if you are physically capable of doing so.
