Many people see golf as a sport which is only about how you play physically and technically. A poor shot or dropped shots are often seen as being a result of a technical error in your swing or the wrong choice of club.
However, much of playing golf successfully comes from having the right attitude and find tuning your mind to the task at hand.
You have may have heard people say, ‘golf is all in the mind’ and not really thought anything of it. Golf is not all about what is going in the mind, there are other aspects to the sport which are just as important but the mental side of the game does play a huge role.
Today, we have some valuable mental golf tips, which will help you to play better golf.
You should be playing golf with goals in mind. If you have not set yourself any goals, you have nothing to strive for and could see your game stagnate. You do not have to set yourself the goal of scoring under a specific number during a round of golf. Your goal can be more precise, such as improving the number of greens you hit in regulation for example.
Any goal which is aimed at improving your game is good but do not be unrealistic. Trying to achieve something which is out of reach will only lead to disappointment.
When you are playing in a competition, whether it be with friends or a local tournament, only focus on you and the course. You may hear other golfers talking about how good another player is but you cannot control how well someone else plays so why worry about it?
Instead, focus on you and the golf course. If you can defeat the course by hitting a low score, you will likely come near the top of the leaderboard at the end of the event.
Do not worry about the past, focus on the future. If you have it a bad shot, there is nothing you can do to change it. If you keep thinking about that shot, you are not concentrating on your next shot, which is the only thing you can control.
If you hit a shot into a bunker for example, there is no point in getting worked up because you are not happy with the outcome. What you need to do, is accept the challenge of hitting the ball out of the bunker successfully and concentrate only on that shot.
Finally, you must accept that it’s OK to miss when playing golf and this is especially true on the green.
It can be extremely frustrating when you miss a short putt. However, even the world’s top professional players miss short putts and it has not prevented them from making a living from playing golf.
It’s very rare even a professional golfer will play the perfect round of golf so there is little point in beating yourself up over a couple of missed putts during a round.
