Your Home Swing Studio

For the fourth #stayathome article I want to talk about how you can turn your garage, home-gym or dressing room into the perfect at home swing studio, just ask your other half first if you want to convert the dressing room.

Each of these areas are generally big enough to be able to swing a club and that is all that matters, I don’t care whether you can actually physically hit a golf ball (air-ball or not), the idea of this is not to perfect hitting a ball, it is to perfect and improve your fundamentals, which in turn will improve your ball striking.

As we already know the fundamentals of a good golf swing are; posture, balance and rhythm and setting up a swing studio at home is going to help you perfect these three aspects. I want you to grab a full-length mirror, and a small mat so as not to damage your club, especially if you decide to use your garage. Clubs and concrete don´t mix well.

You are going to use your full-length mirror as a second pair of eyes (masking tape is also a great aid here) and this will improve your posture immensely, an area where too many golfers are struggling to achieve the correct and best posture for their bodies. I want you to grab the masking tape and mark an angle of 35º – 45º at around about the level of your hips. This will help to show whether your spine angle tilt is correct. Anything outside of this parameter is not good. Once you have adjusted your posture to ensure that your spine is at the correct angle you need to check that you have the following good markers: 1 – space between your chin and chest, with a continuation of a straight spine. 2 – you have at least a fist of space between your hands and body. 3 – Your hands are hanging naturally underneath your shoulders. 4 – if you extend the club towards your body it will meet at your belt buckle. This will help to ensure you are in a good position.

Rhythm – I want you to learn to swoosh the club through the impact zone. The swoosh for many golfers comes to early in the downswing which signifies a loss of energy transfer before reaching the ball. Learn to make the club swoosh through the ball (hence the mat). Doing this without a ball will make it easier to hear.

Balance – I want you to make swings with your feet and knees together, and more importantly with your eyes closed. You need to feel the way your body moves and fights itself to maintain good balance. The more aware you are the better you balance becomes.

Improve these three areas of your swing at home without the need to hit golf balls and you will see a marked improvement when you finally return to the range.
