Throw technique out the window!

Well at least throw your desire to have the perfect technique out of the window for the moment.

Golfers across the world are looking to improve their games and reduce their scores, but many are looking in the wrong place.

Instead of trying to find the secret to longer drives or arrow straight iron shots, you should be looking within yourself for the answer to the biggest question of all.

Why am I standing in my own way?

You may not understand the question, but if you look at your game and how you are performing you will soon come to realise that, even if you had the perfect swing, which doesn´t exist by the way, if you cannot get out of your own way and let the golf basically just happen you will never reach the potential that you have or aspire to having.

It is this single aspect that destroys some incredible talents from actually reaching their true potential.

I have known 16 year-old golfers that have infinite talent and ability to hit great golf shots and shoot incredible scores, but their approach to the mental rigours of the game are similar to that of a 36-handicapped golfer.

So many have the tools to be able to make it as professionals on the circuit, but so few make it.

But why?

Because they stand in their own way, just like you are doing.

They would, as I imagine you would be doing, berate themselves for a putt that sat on the edge of the hole, or a drive that found the trees.

It would be a disaster a show of weakness if they did such a thing.

Rather than accepting that the shot wasn´t exactly as planned and continuing with their game, they would have to analyse, in extreme detail what was the exact reason why the shot went awry.

These golfers, with talent flowing through their blood would get so caught up in trying to be perfect that they would end up far from it.

Perfection in golf does not exist and never will.

But being able to perfect ourselves is a definite possibility.

The main reason for a bad swing or shot is yourself.

If you can learn to control your emotions and your reactions, then you will immediately become a better golfer.

To reach the highest echelons of the sport you need to first conquer yourself and then the other world class players around you. This is a theme that runs down to the beginner.

You must be able to point blame at yourself, and not just your swing to be able to develop into the golfer that you want to be.
