Using a Mirror to Practice Indoors

practice using a mirro

Playing golf in winter or bad conditions is sometimes not an option and not everyone can get to the driving range as often as they wish.  So, what other alternatives are available for practicing golf which can be done at home or in an office?

One of the best ways to work on your golf swing is to use a mirror to practice indoors.  All you need is a half-length wall mounted mirror but if you have the space for a full-length mirror, that would be even better.

When you go out to buy a mirror, you want to find one which will show at least the top half your body when mounted on the wall.  Don’t be afraid to go into the shop and take a couple of swings in some mirrors before deciding on the one you want to buy.  You will regret if you don’t and get home to find all you can see is your head and shoulders.

If you have the space inside to use a real club when practicing your swing in-front of a mirror then great.  If not, you can take your grip using a club and then put it down once you are comfortable you are making the correct grip without the club in place or use a smaller object which is roughly the same width and length of your club grip.

It’s important you get the grip right if you cannot use a club indoors because it will ensure you take up the correct hand positions and shoulder position when making a swing.

Once you have the grip in place, stand in-front of the mirror so you can see as much of your body as possible and take your stance.

Having got into this position, you can then start making practice swings.  You can start by making complete swings and holding your finishing position or you can make a swing to the top of your backswing and then check position.

The key is to not simply make complete swings all the time because you will not learn anything from what is happening with your body at each stage of your swing process.

You can take a small piece of coloured tape and stick it to the mirror to show where the middle of your chest is at address.  This will help you to keep track of this point when you are making your swing and give you a reference point throughout.

You can also use the tape to mark different points of your body at various stages of your swing.  You can mark where your front shoulder should be at the top of the backswing and where your elbows are at follow through.

Finally, don’t forget to think about which club you are using when making a practice swing and what type of shot you are playing.

Your swing will differ depending on these factors and you could work on your swing for different shots and clubs every week.
